NP-LAF Project - Support Project for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries on the Nakai Plateau

 

1. Project Objectives 

 

The objective of the project is to contribute to the sustainability of income from agricultural, livestock and fisheries activities for the Nakai Plateau populations. It also aims to empower the people of the Plateau to strengthen their autonomy and the sustainability of their livelihoods. Finally, it contributes to ensuring that the NTPC society and the donors involved in the dam fully assume their social responsibility.

 

More specifically, the project focuses on two objectives:

Support for the development of agricultural, livestock and fisheries activities by providing technical and institutional support to interested producers in order to eliminate production and marketing constraints;

Strengthen the capacity of district staff to support long-term agricultural and fisheries activities at the technical and institutional levels.

 

Sub-components

 

Component 1: Land Development and Redistribution. The project will carry out an analysis of the agricultural potential of the lands allocated during the displacement of the populations and will define, on a participative basis and in coordination with the local authorities, plans of land use which will have to make it possible to ensure the security of tenure, of avoid land management conflicts and promote agriculture.

 

Component 2: Support to agriculture and livestock. In order to ensure or restore soil fertility and increase yields, the project will support the dissemination of agroecological practices and the development of small livestock, and will work to develop value chains to promote the added value of products associated with livestock. entrepreneurs and the market.

 

Component 3: Development of irrigation. After a diagnosis of the existing irrigation infrastructure, the project will finance the construction and rehabilitation of small infrastructure and strengthen the groups with the dissemination of techniques to improve the management of water.

 

Component 4: Fisheries Management. Fishing is a major source of income for households, especially in the northern zone where land availability is low. The project will contribute to the improvement of the value added of the catches (processing, marketing) and to the participation of the fishermen's association in the sustainable management of the resource. He will coordinate with the team in charge of managing the reservoir and the protected area.

 

Component 5: Capacity Building and Capitalization. The project will create spaces for dialogue bringing together all the actors (producers, local authorities) to exchange points of view and define priority orientations. A capacity building process will be put in place. District Technical Services, particularly DAFO (District Bureau of Agriculture and Forestry), will be directly involved in the implementation of project activities for producers / fishermen and village committees. They will benefit from a study tour and training on the innovative approaches promoted by the project.

 

2. Beneficiaries and Project location

 

The project will beneficial to the 16 villages resettled on the Nakaï Plateau. The project started in September 2017 and will end in August 2022.
